I was in Sunny Beach on Monday 25 May 2009. The rate of exchange was 2.10 to the £. Lev is widely used.

I think you are better off to change your money before you leave for Bulgaria. You have to have levs or else you will get screwed by taxis, etc.

You can to Cash 'Sterling' as the Crown exchange Booths will exchange this and any excess you have is still in English.

When we left on thursday it was 2.15 Lev - Pound GBP.

when we got their 2 weeks earlier it was at 2.07 so the £ is getting stronger

I would advise anybody who will be thinking of bringing Scottish money to Bulgaria to think again. None of the banks will except Scottish notes, the crown exchange boothes will at an exchange rate of 1.95 Leva compared to 2.15 leva to the English pound.

Regards
Tom

The best place to exchange money is the place across the main road from the Diamond Hotel in the center of town (near the Kuban). Seemingly a lot of the other places are mafia controlled.

Crown exchange booths are controlled and not run by the Mafia, all banks are legal, you need to shop around to find which bank is giving the best exchange on the day. Thats it 2 legal options, for the best exchange. I would suggest you do not change money in the UK as the rate is very low, get about 60lv in the UK that will tied you over for the first night. We as a transfer company take sterling, and we tell you how much in Lv based on the exchange rate of the day.
