Yes, I can't think of any other 'one' thing which would transform the flagging numbers of tourists to Sunny Beach.

The new terminal is a very large step forward...!

The following image is a cutaway internal view of the new terminal building being built at Varna.

I believe (only guessing from the architects concept pictures) the design of the New Terminal buildings at Varna and Bourgas are very similar if not the same. So this should give you an idea of the layout at Bourgas. Departures to the right with arrivals/baggage collection to the left.

Mark,
Just round the corner then!
Excellent video, very impressed.
We're going out in May , travelling EasyJet Manchester to Sofia then
Driving over. I've found this to be the cheapest way so far.

Apologies slightly Off Topic :)

Yep, just round the corner Dave.

Looking at going the Sofia/Sunny Beach route again this year as well, in late May/early June, but with a day in Bansko on the outward journey. Not done it for a while.....first time was in 2005, hired a car online with a local company and ended up with an ancient, clapped out Nissan Sunny  The combination of Bulgarian roads (or lack of, particularly the Bansko leg) and kamikaze Bulgarian drivers made it an experience of a lifetime and at times life threatening!!

Since then though they have quite a large program of upgrading and new roads being built, which make long distance road travel a bit more palatable and as we know from Sean on the other thread, part of the road from Bourgas Airport to Sunny Beach is being upgraded.

Heres a bit more info on roads in Bulgaria courtesy again of http://www.skyscrapercity.com/index.php

"Bourgas Airport is a huge leap in development. The airport in the summer should welcome travelers with a new, modern terminal offering modern amenities and a relatively faster and pleasant service. This should increase the number of satisfied tourists and make them come back here again. It is reasonable to attract new airlines and new transport links, and interest in the opening of regular year-round flights to new destinations".

"Today, the new passenger terminal at Bourgas Airport is almost built in the construction part. Forthcoming work on its completion must be completed before the deadline - June. As soon as the first visualization of the terminal were published in the media, the internet forums reaction was mostly negative. Criticism focused on architectural design compared to the supermarket, and the lack of sleeves provided for passengers. Opinions were that again in an important project for the country relies too economical option too big compromise in terms of quality, comfort and modern trends".

This is an old video hosted on youtube dated Aug 2012.

http://youtu.be/7HeRVmwoYlo

It's taken from the runway side and gives you an idea of the scale of the expansion, not only the new terminal 2 building but other associated buildings as well.

Just returned from a very warm and sunny week in St.Vlas 8)

New airport terminal still being worked on. Still looks like a lot of work to do, although plenty of activity on the external works and car parks.

New section of dual carriageway towards Sunny Beach from airport also a long way from being finished I would say, but progress being made.

Fraport Twin Star has opened a new passenger Terminal at Burgas Airport.

Photographs of the new Terminal http://e-burgas.com/archives/59821 and a video below

4th December 2013

Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD inaugurated today the new passenger terminal at Burgas airport. The investment in the newest, modern facility of Burgas city and the necessary infrastructure for its operation is 80 million levs – completely private investment. Construction of the terminal is of significant importance for the development of the Black Sea city and the tourism industry on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

“The new terminal is the result of the intense work of thousands of people from all over Europe who have planned, designed and executed our Terminal 2: a state of the art, modern, smart terminal that we can make smaller during winter and larger in the future. And moreover it is tailor made for our main customers: providing excellent services to more than competitive prices and all that within holiday ambience”,said the CEO of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management Mrs. Aletta von Massenbach.
“Also Fraport AG as the majority shareholder of Fraport Twin Star is very proud of this modern, smart and state of the art New Terminal at Burgas Airport. With all our experience managing 13 airports all over the world I can confirm that this new terminal meets all international standards and criteria for new airport facilities”, said Alexander Zinell – vice-president of Fraport AG.
“This is the largest investment made for Burgas airport in the recent decades. This is an excellent example of a successful public- private partnership. Thanks to this partnership Burgas and Varna already have beautiful and modern airports that will contribute to the development of the tourism and economy in the region and Bulgaria”, said Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Georgi Todorov.

The Mayor of Burgas Mr. Dimitar Nikolov pointed out that the new passenger terminal will open attractive business opportunities and will expand the map of the world destinations served by the airport. The construction of the new terminal is an investment in the future of the tourism and economic prosperity of the city, he said.

The new facility blessed the Sliven bishop Yoanikiy. Guests were welcomed with the sounds of Burgas Brass Orchestra and a special musical surprise welcomed them in the arrivals.

Later on the guests at the inauguration went to a tour guided by the director of the airport Mr. Georgi Chipilski. This was the first of the range of tours that FTSAM AD organizes tomorrow for the citizens of Burgas within the doors open day.

Terminal 2 at the airport of Burgas is located on an area of 21 000 square meters. The building is designed to fully meet the needs of Burgas airport and the traffic served at the airport. The annual capacity of Terminal 2 is 2.7 million passengers.
The new facility has large areas for arriving and departing passengers, state-of-the-art baggage and passenger handling systems, attractive shopping areas, extended to an area of about 2000 square meters. All processes in the new terminal building are automated.

Designed by the British-based architects Halcrow Group, Pascall + Watson in partnership with SavantElbul of Bulgaria, the 21,000-square-meter BOJ terminal integrates characteristic elements of Bulgarian nature and architecture. For example, the rose - which is a national symbol and cultural tradition - is used in the design. The terminal is equipped with 31 check-in counters, 3 boarding-card checkpoints; 9 security lanes and 8 departure gates. The arrivals area (divided into Schengen and non-Schengen zones) has 12 immigration stations and 4 baggage carousels (one 120-meter-long and three 70-meter-long carousels). Passenger amenities include 800 square meters of space dedicated to shopping and 1,220 square meters for food and beverage services. An outdoor 550 square-meter courtyard is another attractive facility for passengers.

The design of the new passenger terminal at Burgas Airport combines the elements of architecture and nature typical for the region. So, the roses re-created in the interior of the baggage reclaim area are the first impression for the arriving passengers.
Over 1,000 workers and employees were engaged in the construction of the new facility. In connection with the implementation of the project prior activities were organized for clearing the site on which today the new terminal is built. Save the terminal building itself as an integral part of the facility new infrastructure was built as well like new water supply, power supply, cable collector with substations, etc. The concept design was developed by the British Halcrow Group and Pascal & Watson, and further developed by their Bulgarian colleagues from SavantElbul. The construction work was implemented by the Bulgarian-Turkish consortium TIE- İÇTAŞ, and the management and control were implemented by the German company Schüßler-Plan.
